ABOUT SUMMIT
Summit, one of the premier towns in New Jersey, is special. It's uniquely both a great destination
place AND a great gateway to New York City
and the area. So enjoy Summit itself and as a home base for getting
around the area.
Destination Summit
Summit has it; that special feeling that makes Summit a place
people want to be. As one magazine summed it up: “small
town charm / big city style” (NJ
Savvy, Oct., 2006). In other words, Summit is small enough where
people say hello on the street and mean it. At the same time,
Summit is a cosmopolitan, sophisticated town and a place that
has many unique attractions.
Aptly named at a height of 450’, Summit is on one of
the highest points of land within 20 miles. It’s natural
beauty lead to Summit being developed as an exclusive summer
resort in the later 1800’s. People from NYC came
out to enjoy the refreshing “mountain” air. Luxury
hotels were built along with grand country estates. Quite a
few of these estate homes remain, the DeBary being one.

Over time Summit became better known in the early 1900’s
as an ideal place to live for commuters to NYC, a status
that still holds true today.
And the Summit of today continues to
be a wonderful destination town. Its heart is its quaint, tree-lined
downtown that radiates out from the comings and goings of the train
station. You’ll find unique specialty shops and a diverse selection
of fine and casual dining.
Summit has kept its great natural beauty. Its rolling
hills have almost 500 acres of preserved green space. You see it when
you first get off the train; the Village Green – a four block
expanse of open lawn with sheltering groups of shade trees and open
air summer concerts – runs along the south side of the train station.
And finally, Summit also has such unique attractions as
a beautiful arboretum, an art center for teaching and showing exhibits,
and a major antiquing center. (See Area Attractions
section)
Gateway Summit
“Location, location, location” is how the
saying goes and that’s what Summit has with the best combination
of proximity to:
• NYC … a 35 minute express train with frequent
service.
• Express highways.
• Transportation links … trains and busses take you to businesses,
malls, and other towns in the area.
• The countryside … just minutes away.
So whether it’s for business or for pleasure Summit is an ideal
place to be, especially when it’s at the DeBary Inn.
